Maika was founded in 2009 and incorporated as a non-profit
organization under IRS code 501(c)3 in 2010.
Maika means "parent's home for a married girl" in Urdu
and Hindi. After a woman marries, her parent's home becomes the
"maika", where she can go to relax and take a break from her daily
routine of duties.
Our non-profit organization,
Maika Inc. was initially intended to be a homeless shelter for South Asian
women and children but because of contacted by a variety of immigrant women that
are victims of domestic violence and abuse inflicted on both themselves and
their children, we have extended our support services to a much wider support areas.
Most of the victims we help have no extended family in the US; many don't speak
English and are in desperate need of assistance; some are even fearful of being
All of our staff are volunteers who provide their services outside of
their regular jobs and daily responsibilities to assist helpless and battered
women and children who start all over again and live a life free from emotional and
physical abuse and constant fear.
We help all women regardless of immigration status and
faith. If required, we provide access to marriage and family counseling, but
most women who contact us have already fled from their abusive partners or are
in the process of doing so.
